A Local's Guide to Healthy Eating on Northcote Road
A personal trainer's guide to healthy eating on Northcote Road: how to order protein-rich breakfasts, lunches and dinners and keep losing fat while eating out.
Northcote Road is full of places to eat, and my studio is right here at number 25. Most of my clients grab a coffee or a meal on this street at some point in the week, and many ask the same thing: can I eat out and still lose fat?
You can. You don't need to avoid cafés, restaurants or the market. You just need a simple way to order. This guide shows you how I'd do it, whether you're after breakfast, lunch or dinner.
The One Rule: Start With Protein
I coach weights-first fat loss. Protein is what helps you keep and build muscle while you lose fat, and it keeps you full. A common guideline for people who lift weights is roughly 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilo of body weight each day. You can work out your own numbers with my free calorie and macro calculator.
Whenever you order, decide the protein first. Then add vegetables, then choose your carbs and fats on purpose. A portion of protein about the size of your palm at each meal is a good starting point.
Breakfast and Brunch
Breakfast is where a lot of people lose control without noticing. Pastries and pancakes can be 500 calories or more with very little protein.
Alma Café at 47 Northcote Road is a popular brunch spot with a seasonal menu, and eggs are the easiest way to keep your protein up there. Order an egg-based dish, ask for an extra egg or a side of protein, and add vegetables where you can. If you fancy the pancakes, that's fine. Just treat them as a planned treat and have a higher-protein meal later in the day.
Menus change, so check the current one before you go.
The Market and Fresh Food
Northcote Road has had a food market since the 1860s. It's smaller than it once was, but it's still a handy place to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables for the week. What's on sale varies by day, so have a look when you're passing.
Fresh vegetables are the cheapest way to add volume and fibre to any meal. A bag of salad, some peppers and a bag of fruit can turn a basic meal into a filling one.
Lunch: How to Order Well
Lunch is where most people on this road are rushing between work and everything else. Here's the pattern I give clients for any café, deli or sandwich shop:
- Pick the protein first: chicken, eggs, fish, tuna, turkey, halloumi or beans.
- Add vegetables: salad, grilled veg or soup on the side.
- Choose your carbs deliberately: bread, wraps, rice or potatoes are all fine, you're just deciding rather than defaulting.
- Watch the extras: dressings, creamy sauces and crisps can quietly add 200 to 300 calories.
- Be careful with liquid calories: smoothies and juice bars, such as the Joe & the Juice on Northcote Road, can contain as many calories as a meal. Treat them as a snack, or choose a protein option if you want one with lunch.

Dinner: Eating Out Without Derailing Your Week
Northcote Road has plenty of restaurants and pubs, and you don't have to skip them. The pattern is the same:
- Choose a grilled, roasted or baked main with a protein at the centre.
- Ask for extra vegetables or salad instead of fries if you want to keep calories down.
- Share a starter or dessert if you want both.
- Eat a normal day before you go. Starving yourself all day usually leads to eating far more at dinner.
If you've got a night out planned, one big meal won't undo your progress. What matters is the average of your week, not one dinner.
A Simple Day of Eating on Northcote Road
This is an example, not a rule:
- Breakfast: eggs on toast with vegetables at a local café.
- Lunch: a chicken or tuna salad with a bread roll on the side.
- Snack: Greek yoghurt and fruit, or a protein bar.
- Dinner: grilled fish or chicken with vegetables and potatoes.
Most meals like this land at roughly 25 to 40 grams of protein, which is a good range to aim for.
