I’m John Parlanti, a personal trainer based in Clapham. Fitness didn’t always come naturally to me. I wasn’t always in shape. At one point, I weighed 120kg. I know what it feels like to struggle with consistency, confidence, and motivation.

123kg of a fat man. Rolls big enough for a dog to sit on. But when you’re in that state, you adjust to that “normal”. Making yourself think that it’s ok, that it’s fine to not go to the gym, that you’re “too busy”, that it’s fine to let your health and fitness fall by the wayside because you’re prioritising something else. It took me 5 years to realise that this wasn’t the life I wanted to live. Avoiding every camera because deep down I was ashamed of myself, blood pressure through the roof, 5 years of poor health, just wasting my life away.

Then covid happened.

BANG. A chain of events was set in motion. Having time off work, not seeing anybody made me assess my situation, I had time to realise that I needed to change everything I was doing. My diet, my fitness, my health. My health became my priority and I set off at max effort.

I brought a few weights for the garden, I set myself daily step goals, I brought a Myzone belt so I could track my workouts. Over the next few months, I dropped 20kg in body fat while putting on muscle and felt incredible, unrecognisable, the best I felt in 10 years.

The transformation I achieved inspired me to become a coach and help other people who are struggling to become fitter and healthier, so they can be better for themselves, their family, friends and colleagues. You can’t appreciate being fit and healthy all the time until you’ve made the transformation and then look back to where you came from.

From Transformation to Professional Coaching

Fitness wasn’t something that always came naturally to me. Although I grew up around sport, athletics, football and swimming discipline and structure weren’t always consistent in my own life. That’s exactly why my transformation meant so much.

After losing 20kg and rebuilding my health, I wanted to understand the process properly, not just for myself, but so I could help others avoid wasting years like I did. I entered the fitness industry in 2007 and began working across public and private fitness centres in both gym and pool environments. Over time, I gained experience coaching complete beginners, busy professionals, and athletes training at a competitive level.

Qualifications

What separates my coaching isn’t just qualifications. It’s lived experience combined with over a decade of professional practice.

I am fully qualified under the Focus awarding body and hold:

• Level 3 Personal Training qualification
• Level 3 Sports Science qualification
• Level 2 Swimming Coach qualification
• Indoor Cycling Instructor certification
• Full professional insurance

My coaching philosophy is simple:

I’m based in Clapham, working with clients across SW4 and SW11, including Clapham Common and Clapham Junction. CARDIO & STRENGTH

I combine strength training with conditioning work to improve body composition, cardiovascular health and overall performance. Strength training forms the foundation building lean muscle, improving posture, increasing metabolic efficiency and enhancing resilience. Conditioning is layered in strategically to support fat loss, stamina and long-term heart health. The goal isn’t just to “get tired.” It’s to build functional strength and endurance that carries over into real life, inside and outside the gym.

ENCOURAGEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Consistency is built through structure, not motivation alone. Alongside in-person sessions, I use the Parlanti Method App to provide full accountability between workouts.
